Reading & Writing

Every Child Wants to Read

There is no child that does not want to read-but there are many who do not have the tools to read, or read fluently. The saying reading is fundamental is true, but phonology/phonics is the building blocks that creates an unmovable foundation. Studies have shown that if children, as young as pre-k, are not introduced to phonics they may not be as successful as their peers who have.

We are staunch proponents of the Orton Gillingham Approach: a sequential, structured, explicit teaching structure that relies on merging all three pathways to learning-visual, auditory and kinesthetics to enhance phonetic, spelling and writing skills. This program is catered to struggling readers who are lacking in the fundamental building blocks of reading. Those students who are on pace, but may have just a few areas that need fine tuning such as expanding vocabulary, reading fluency or comprehension, can also benefit from this program.

We approach writing from the perspective of instilling in our students the idea that they are blossoming writers that just need to find their voice and unlock their full potential. This unlocking comes in the form of various writing strategies and embracing creativity through visuals.
